Why a river cruise?

Bottom line: we love them. We think this is hands down the best way to travel together as a group to experience the Christmas Markets in Europe.

We have hosted group trips throughout Europe, but absolutely nothing beats Christmas.

Christmas in Europe is undoubtedly magical. But the best way to experience the markets is to go from place to place, city to city. Unpacking every day, taking trains and public transportation is not only a hassle, it takes away from the time you can be spending exploring.

We designed the cruise so we mostly cruise at night and wake up each morning in different locations. We hand-picked the destinations and maximized our time at each stop.

Having attended over 100+ Christmas markets in Europe, we found the best and designed the perfect itinerary- all with the ease, comfort, convenience, and the BEST price on our own chartered ship.

Christmas Cruise at a Glance:

We created these itineraries with what we know works best. We maximized time at destinations, offer two excursions per day, and made sure you could do both OR have more time to explore on your own. It's up to YOU.

Plus an incredible luxury boat, beautiful rooms, delicious food, and the magic of Christmas. There is simply nothing like it!

ALL INCLUSIVE: All drinks (including beer, wine, soft drinks, and top-shelf alcohol), food, gala party, tips, laundry, and one daily excursion.

TIME: Having done many cruises, time is always a factor. Which is why we managed the time to a T- creating the perfect itinerary - with time to explore, take guided tours, relax on the boat, and create a trip that is special.

Hassle-Free Travel: Unpack ONCE! No stress of packing and repacking, and go from destination to destination, all on a luxury river cruise. No lugging suitcases up and down staircases and across cobblestone streets!

No sea sickness, because we're on a river and there are no waves! Truly, it feels more like a moving luxury hotel.

We've combined the best of the Christmas markets, ease of travel, a luxury ship, and unbeatable prices to make this a memorable and accessible trip.

Rhine Wonderland Full Itinerary:

DATES:

Week 1: December 1 - December 7, 2026 (Cologne to Frankfurt) with Helene and Michael

Week 2: December 7- 13, 2026 (Frankfurt to Cologne) with Rupert

Week 3: December 14 - December 20, 2026 (Cologne to Frankfurt) with Helene and Michael

Day 1

Arrival in Cologne & Walking Tour

  • We start off in one of my favorite Christmas Markets and cities in Germany: Cologne!
  • Why Cologne? Because it's the best way to fly from the USA and/or within Europe. It is near Frankfurt Airport or you can fly directly to Cologne.  Flights are very easy and affordable here, plus Cologne has great train connections.
  • Famous for both its enormous gothic cathedral (a UNESCO site! and once the tallest building in the world) housing the relics of the Three Wiseman and tiny (don’t worry, you’re encouraged to enjoy more than one) Kölsch beers always served at the perfect temperature, Cologne is also home to eight of the best Christmas Markets in Europe.
  • Today’s included excursion will be a walking tour of the city center learning about this fascinating Roman city, an introduction to Christmas Markets and ending at the magnificent cathedral.

Day 2

Cruise to Rüdesheim and Winery

  • Did you know there are more castles on this stretch of the Middle Rhine than nearly anywhere in the world?! All located along the tall cliff sides of the Rhine. We know this guided day time sailing will be a highlight of the week (it was last year too!). Our port city, Rudesheim, is located in the heart of this wine valley with half timbered homes and wine shops almost too cute to believe.
  • The included excursion is a walking tour throughout town, including the narrow Drosselgasse, ending at the Mechanical Instrument Museum, where guides will demonstrate these fantastic machines for us!
  • The optional excursion will be to a coffee house to try the famous Rudeseheimer coffee, fortified with their local spirit, and then on to a winery to taste some of the best German wine you can find.
  • This stop is a top favorite on our cruises every year! It's such a beautiful, historic town that's so easy to explore! Take the cable car up for views, go shopping at the incredible market, and get lost in the winding streets!

Day 3

Heidelberg and Mannheim

  • Today is VERY exciting because we are heading to my favorite city: Heidelberg! I'm biased because Michael and I lived here. But this city is the PERFECT mix of a romantic castle, river, amazing, walkable Christmas Markets, and utter beauty!
  • In our included excursion, we'll take a tour of Heidelberg, explore the LARGEST wine barrel in the world, see the castle, hear the history and find over 100 decorated stalls at the Christmas Market!
  • Stay at our port and explore Mannheim! Mannheim is a city of Baroque opulence built uniquely on a chessboard grid layout. Carl Benz first successfully demonstrated his car here in 1886, the palace is one of the largest ever covering 14 acres of interior space and the red sandstone water tower and Luisenpark further beautify the city.
  • Bad DĂĽrkheim is home to both the largest and oldest (dating back to 1417!) wine festival in the world and our optional excursion for the day. This wine region known as the Pfalz is just a few miles from the French border and has actually changed its nationality several times throughout history. This in-depth tasting will feature several wines in addition to sparkling wine and liqueur. Local sausages will complement the wines.

Day 4

Strasbourg

  • YOU ASKED, WE LISTENED.
You wanted more time in Strasbourg and time in the Black Forest — and somehow, we made both happen. This is something no other Christmas market cruise offers, and it’s one of the reasons this itinerary is so special.
  • Strasbourg is known as the Capital of Christmas for a reason. This is where the tradition of Christmas markets truly comes alive. A towering Christmas tree dominates the main square, hundreds of stalls spill through the historic center, and the decorations are nothing short of spectacular. Think: half-timbered houses draped in lights, teddy bears and angels tucked into every corner, and even Baccarat crystal chandeliers glittering above the streets.
  • Our included guided excursion takes you through the heart of the city, stopping at all the highlights — the magnificent Strasbourg Cathedral with its intricate astronomical clock, the postcard-perfect canals of Petite France, and the most iconic Christmas markets throughout town. Afterward, you’ll have free time to wander, shop, sip vin chaud, and soak up the atmosphere at your own pace.

Day 5

Strasbourg & The Black Forest

  • We stay docked in Strasbourg!!! Your trip is yours so that means you can have an additional day in Strasbourg or head to the magical Black Forest!
  • The fairy tale famous Black Forest will enchant and delight. We’ll travel through the beautiful wintry mountains to visit the Vogtsbauernhof, an open air historical museum featuring the rich Schwarzwald culture. We’ll learn about the traditional dress, cuckoo clocks, and even try the famous Black Forest cake!
  • Then we’ll stop in the beautiful town of Gengenbach to enjoy the world’s largest Advent calendar, set across the windows of the town hall. Gengenbach’s Christmas market feels wonderfully local and cozy — a perfect contrast to the grandeur of Strasbourg.
  • This day is the best of both worlds: deep tradition, breathtaking scenery, and a Christmas experience that feels intimate, authentic, and incredibly special.

Day 6

Mainz & Wiesbaden

  • Mainz's 2000-year-old history is highlighted by one famous individual, Johannes Gutenberg. The man who invented the modern printing press (creating the original information age) changed the world, and not one but two of his original Bibles can be found in his hometown museum.
  • Strolling Mainz’s historic center with its medieval market squares is a delight, and that’s just what we’ll do along with our entertaining guide for our included excursion of the day. We’ll learn all about the 1,000-year-old cathedral as we pass beautiful Christmas Markets. Mainz is surrounded by gorgeous half-timbered architecture and unique Christmas Markets! The food in Mainz is absolutely exceptional. Sizzling bratwurst, kartoffelpuffer (basically fried potato pancakes), the best chimney cakes I've ever had, and Michael's favorite: Mohn Strudel!
  • Our optional excursion for the day will be a visit to nearby Wiesbaden. One of the most beautiful cities in Germany, it was designed as such with wellness and luxury in mind. This spa town has spectacular architecture with grand spires reaching to the sky all across town. Your guide will teach you all about it as well as provide free time to explore on your own. Of course, there is a wonderful Christmas market here too!

Day 7

Frankfurt

  • All good things must come to an end, but what better place to wrap up our journey than in Frankfurt? We chose to start and end near Frankfurt because it’s home to one of the world’s largest and most well-connected airports, making onward travel a breeze. Frankfurt’s central location and excellent train connections also make it easy to extend your trip if you’d like to explore more of Europe!
  • Frankfurt has so much to offer, from its picturesque Christmas markets to its blend of modern skyscrapers and historic charm. The interconnected markets throughout the Römerberg square are a highlight, offering festive treats, handcrafted gifts, and the perfect holiday atmosphere. Whether you’re grabbing one last GlĂĽhwein or taking in the city’s twinkling lights, Frankfurt is a wonderful way to end the adventure.
  • We will say "Auf Wiedersehen" to Frankfurt, but the memories of this magical Christmas market cruise will last a lifetime!

Rhine Cruise Routes

Here's the beauty of our Rhine itinerary: whether you begin in Cologne or Frankfurt, you'll experience the same magical destinations—just in a different order. Our ship sails back and forth between these two well-connected cities. It's extremely easy to get to either! For week 1 and week 3 we sail from Cologne to Frankfurt with Michael and Helene and have an excursion in Cologne and not Frankfurt. Week 2 sails from Frankfurt to Cologne with Rupert with a tour of Frankfurt and not Cologne.

Week 1 Dec 1–7 Cologne → Frankfurt With Helene & Michael

Week 2 Dec 7–13 Frankfurt → Cologne with Rupert

Week 3 Dec 14–20 Cologne → Frankfurt With Helene & Michael

Deck the Danube Full Itinerary:

DATES:

Week 1: December 7 - 13, 2026 (Passau to Budapest) with Helene and Michael

Week 2: December 13 - 19, 2026 (Budapest to Passau) with Rupert

Day 1

Arrival in Passau

  • We begin our journey in one of Germany’s best local Christmas market cities: Passau.
  • Why Passau? Known as the City of Three Rivers, Passau sits at the meeting point of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz rivers and has been a crossroads for travelers for more than 2,000 years. It’s easily reached by train from nearby Munich, yet still feels wonderfully local and uncrowded — the perfect place to start our Christmas market adventure!
  • Passau’s historic Altstadt (Old Town) rises at the confluence of the rivers, watched over by the 13th-century Fortress Oberhaus perched on the hill above. At its heart is St. Stephen’s Cathedral, home to the largest cathedral organ in Europe, with nearly 18,000 pipes ranging from an astonishing 36 feet to just a quarter of an inch. This same square transforms into Passau’s magical Christmas market — intimate, festive, and filled with regional charm.
  • Our included guided walking tour brings the city’s long history to life, sharing stories from two millennia of life along the rivers and Christmases past. Afterward, you’ll have free time to explore the market, known for its handcrafted goods, local specialties, and cozy Bavarian atmosphere. Wander the market which prides itself on local handmade products and sengzelten; a local Bavarian dish similar to tarte flambĂ©e!

Day 2

Linz & Salzburg

  • The hills are alive! We're heading to Austria and to the amazing city of the Sound of Music: Salzburg and the glittering Linz! Austria’s third-largest city and our included excursion today! Linz is a delightful blend of rich history and modern culture. Nestled along the Danube River, Linz offers a captivating mix of medieval charm and contemporary innovation. The city boasts enchanting Christmas markets, including the elegant Stiegl Klosterhof market, which feels straight out of a winter wonderland with its twinkling lights and festive decor - literally thousands of red ornaments! These markets are a hidden gem, offering an intimate holiday experience without overwhelming crowds.
  • For music lovers and holiday enthusiasts, Salzburg is a dream destination. Our optional excursion takes us to this UNESCO-listed city, the birthplace of Mozart and the filming location for The Sound of Music. We'll have a guided tour and plenty of free time! Wander through the historic old town, marvel at Baroque architecture, and visit the famous Salzburg Cathedral. The city’s Christmas markets are a highlight, featuring charming wooden stalls with handcrafted goods, traditional Austrian treats, and the warmth of mulled wine.
  •  This day offers the best of both worlds: the charm and intimacy of Linz’s markets and the grandeur of Salzburg’s Baroque beauty, ensuring a magical and memorable holiday experience!

Day 3

Melk Abbey & DĂĽrnstein Abbey

  • DĂĽrnstein is the quintessential storybook village nestled in the heart of Austria's Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Known as one of the most beautiful towns along the Danube, it’s impossible not to fall in love with its charm. The baby blue DĂĽrnstein Abbey, with its striking baroque tower, is a showstopper visible from the river. It’s an iconic landmark that feels straight out of a fairytale.
  • Our included walking tour of DĂĽrnstein (a cruise favorite last year!) will take you through its winding cobblestone streets lined with charming shops, local wine taverns, and historic architecture. You’ll hear the fascinating story of King Richard the Lionheart, who was famously imprisoned in the castle ruins overlooking the village. As we explore the picturesque old town, you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the festive atmosphere, indulge in local specialties, sip on mulled wine, and admire the stunning views of the Danube framed by terraced vineyards.
  • Prepare to have your mind... BLOWN! Melk Abbey is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in the world and it's perched on a hill overlooking the Danube. This Benedictine abbey is famous for its stunning frescoes, grand marble hall, and historic library filled with medieval manuscripts. It’s no wonder Melk Abbey inspired Umberto Eco’s novel The Name of the Rose.

Day 4 & 5

Vienna

  • Vienna was officially named the MOST BEAUTIFUL CHRISTMAS MARKET! And I absolutely think this market shines. Known as the City of Music, Vienna’s charm lies in its blend of grand imperial architecture and festive markets.
  • Vienna is truly a jewel of Europe and it's a city worth exploring. Here, we'll have an included walking tour and explore the history and grandeur of this lovely city.
  • Visit Vienna’s iconic landmarks, including the majestic Hofburg Imperial Palace and the world-famous St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Stroll through the pedestrian-friendly city center and explore charming Christmas markets filled with holiday delights. It’s the perfect introduction to Vienna’s timeless elegance and Christmas magic!
  • With over TWENTY Christmas markets in Vienna, palaces, music, and holiday cheer, this city truly is one of the best destinations! Whether you're drawn to the grandeur of Rathausplatz, the Baroque beauty of Schönbrunn Palace's market, or the cozy winding streets of Spittelberg, there's a market here for every mood. Vienna's legendary coffee house culture awaits—sink into a velvet booth with a Melange and a slice of Sachertorte, just as the Viennese have done for centuries.
  • In the evening, attend our optional excursion with the “Sound of Vienna” classical concert, featuring music of Strauss! It’s the perfect way to celebrate Vienna’s timeless musical heritage. Truly remarkable!
  • We stay 2 days in Vienna to give you the maximum amount of time to experience this glorious city!

Day 5

Bratislava

  • Bratislava, the charming capital of Slovakia, boasts a unique blend of Gothic, Baroque, and modern influences. It's buzzing with history, music, charming Christmas markets, and incredible food. The atmosphere here is just unbeatable.
  • Frankly, the Christmas market here is AMAZING. The food here is absolutely unmatched!
  • Our included guided walking tour takes you through the beautifully restored old town, where cobblestone streets and pastel-colored facades create a picturesque backdrop. Highlights include St. Martin’s Cathedral, Grassalkovich Palace, and Michael’s Gate, the last remaining medieval fortification. Then, we'll try the famous Pressburger roll!
  • The optional excursion lets you take part in a unique beer and honey tasting experience. Sample local brews alongside traditional Slovak honey products, all while learning about the rich culinary history of the region.

    Read more at: https://europe.stripes.com/travel/the-christmas-markets-of-mainz-and-wiesbaden.html
Source - Stars and StOur optional excursion is to Esztergom, which was once the royal seat of Hungarian kings. Visit Hungary’s largest cathedral, a magnificent basilica featuring an ornate red marble chapel and breathtaking interiors. It’s a day filled with history, art, and stunning vistas. We'll stroll through the Christmas market, complete with an ice skating rink!

Day 7

Budapest

  • We depart here but not before saying "cheers" to our magical memories! Budapest is a wonderful city to explore, and is known as the "Queen of the Danube," it is a city that seamlessly blends history, culture, and stunning architecture. Once part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the city is split into two sides—Buda, with its historic castles and hills, and Pest, bustling with urban energy. A city that shines even brighter during the holiday season.
  • Wander the Great Market Hall, Hungary’s largest indoor market, built in 1896. Discover Hungarian specialties like Tokaj wine and paprika while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Continue to the City Park, home to the romantic Vajdahunyad Castle and the famous SzĂ©chenyi Baths, some of Europe’s largest thermal baths.
  • Delve deeper into Budapest’s rich history with a visit to Castle Hill and its historic wonders in Pest! You'll pass landmarks like the Hungarian State Opera and the striking Neo-Gothic Parliament building. Explore Castle Hill, home to St. Matthias Church and the Fisherman’s Bastion, with its panoramic views of the city.

Danube Cruise Routes

Our Danube cruise sails between Passau and Budapest, offering two ways to experience the same unforgettable itinerary. Week 1 journeys from the charming Bavarian town of Passau to the grand "Queen of the Danube," Budapest—with Helene and Michael on board. Week 2 sails the reverse, starting in Budapest and ending in Passau. The ony difference is week 2 will not have a guided tour in Passau. Same destinations, same Christmas magic—just in a different order. Choose the direction that fits you!

The Ship

Michael and I have taken dozens of cruises, and our favorite way to travel is a river cruise!

You don't feel like you're on a ship (no motion sickness!). They are small (only 168 or 218 passengers), and intimate but large enough to have multiple dining areas.

We've partnered with Nicko Cruises to make a CUSTOM, unique itinerary with our favorite destinations, excursions, and drink packages! Both ships are a modern design, with two restaurants, elegantly styled bedrooms and interiors, and panoramic windows. There is also a spa and a gym with a sauna for workouts and additional relaxation. The ships include a restaurant, bar and lounges, along with lovely rooms and suites. These are 5 star ships and are sister ships built to the highest standard of luxury.

Each room on our ships offers windows, king beds that can easily be split into two twins, and a bathroom.

The upper deck offers a lounge and bar as well as informal dining and Mario's dining. The Middle deck offers more formal dining (but no dress code required!), concierge and the ship shop. The main deck is the spa and sauna. There's a sun deck for incredible outdoor views.

These ships are exceptional and the perfect way to experience the Christmas Markets!

The Rooms:

State Room vs Panorama Room

All the rooms are sized and appointed identically. There are a few rooms on the main deck with porthole windows that are offered at a discounted price. All the other rooms have full, panorama glass windows. We would recommend the Panorama room to get a view from the comfort of your bed!

When you purchase, you can either select SOLO (and you will be paired with a roommate) OR for two people - DOUBLE and you will put down a deposit for both of you. You can choose to have the beds together or separated.

All of our trips have offered double occupancy rooms. It's the best to get to know each other and so fun! And, of course, you can travel solo! This is the best way to make friends.

He’s also served as International Representative for American Queen Voyages and Victory Cruise Lines in the USA and UK Representative for Nicko River Cruises in Europe.

Rupert now helps lead and support our European river cruise operations—keeping everything smooth, organized, and genuinely fun. He lives just outside Cambridge with his wife Alice and their miniature dachshund, Mabel in a beautiful thatched roof cottage!

He will be on the Rhine trip December 7 -  13th 2026

AND

The Danube December 13- 19, 2026.

Why did we charter a ship?

The truth is, Michael and I have been traveling Europe for a decade and absolutely love the Christmas Markets. Having been to so many and explored them in so many ways, we loved the river cruise best.

However, the issue was many of these itineraries were not designed for how many might like to travel. We know what we like: maximize time at each destination, offer time to explore on your own, and be able to do MULTIPLE excursions in one day.

I'll never forget one woman on my trip, distraught because she couldn't possibly choose between the Black Forest or Strasbourg. And honestly? I wouldn't want to choose either! So, we personally customized the itinerary for well over a year.

These are the best Christmas Market itineraries... ever. And I have no doubt this journey will be a trip of a lifetime! The proof? 80 repeat guests came back last year. Once you experience it, you'll understand why.

Food and Drink on Board

The food is truly one of the best parts of our river cruise! Everything is included - including beer, wine, soft drinks, cocktails, and top-shelf alcohol! You'll get to try foods inspired by the local cuisine of each destination we are sailing to!

There are multiple options for dining: seated menu and casual dining. Each one offers impeccable service. Most cruises offer only a selection of beer and wine each day. We wanted you to feel free to try whatever suits your fancy! There is also coffee, tea, and snacks always available!
